Updated 3/31 - Pet owners: Pet food recall has been expanded (again) on 3/30 to include Hills Prescription m/d DRY cat food, and Purina's ALPO Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Note that Itchmo blog offers email alerts as new products are added to recall -- go to www.itchmo.com/ and click on "Get Recall Alerts" (at the top of the home page). Nick doesn't understand how innocent pets could be poisoned by their food, so he and Lucy helped me write this letter to Congresspersons Dick Durbin (IL) and Rosa DeLauro (CT): Dear Ms. DeLauro & Mr. Durbin, THANK YOU for asking the FDA for details related to the tainted Menu Foods pet food. I have 2 cats who, thank goodness, are okay. But my heart breaks for pets and owners impacted by this horrible tragedy. Imagine the guilt of having fed your pet what caused their death? No pet owner should have to wonder if they are feeding their pet tainted food, nor wonder which brands are most likely *not*! tainted. If the pet food chain is subject to this type of issue, it makes one wonder about vulnerabilities of the human food chain. There must also be a system put into place to alert veterinarians to pet health hazards such as the tainted food. Again, I am so grateful for your action to protect our pets and help all of us pet owners understand what went wrong (so that it may never happen again). Karen Impact to date - Based on veterinarian reports, over 470 pets have been made ill or died; self-reported cases currently number 1,924 deceased pets (1,095 cats/829 dogs) as of 7pm PDT March 26, 2007. More information about the pet food recall: howl911.com/ www.petconnection.com/blog/ playingbig.blogspot.com/index.html www.doggedblog.com/doggedblog/ Today the ASPCA reports that, based on these data, clinical signs reported in cats affected by the contaminated foods are not fully consistent with the ingestion of rat poison containing aminopterin that, according to Menu F! oods, is at the "root" of the contamination issue. "We! ve seen reports coming in from all around the country that animals that were eating the contaminated foods are definitely suffering from renal failure," said Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCA's Midwest Office, including the APCC. "But the data that we've been collecting do not conclusively prove this connection, which is why we strongly recommend that those involved in the investigation continue to search for additional contaminants." www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=press_032707_2 Please visit this Flickr group and leave a comment for the human victims of the Menu Foods Recall, they could use your support right now: flickr.com/groups/petfoodrecall/
