Most people have no way of knowing whether their monitor shows what it should be showing, and it is probable that the MAJORITY are a fair way from what they should be. I spent several years as a photographer and posted many carefully processed photos on the web before discovering that I could not even see 20% of the darker end of the range, with the result that many of my photos had ugly errors in the shadows -- obvious errors that I could not see, but that others could see very clearly. I bought a screen calibrator. With the basic brightness and contrast controls it is easy to maladjust a monitor so badly that what you are seeing bears no relationship to what the poster meant you to see, and the manufacturers don't give you any instructions on how to do it properly. Here is a simple way to see ! whether yours is (hopefully) roughly what it should be, and how to do something about it if not. It is not a sophisticated test, but is way better than nothing.
