CCTV:Three police officers are being investigated over an attack on a British war hero which was captured on CCTV.Lance Corporal Mark Aspinall, 24, had been out drinking with friends in Wigan on July 27/08 when he was arrested following a case of mistaken identity over a man said to have been causing a nuisance to paramedics.The soldier - who had been highly praised by his commanding offic More..er for bravery against the Taliban in Afghanistan - was set upon by three uniformed officers in the high street of his home town.He was wrestled to the ground by the officers - Special Constable Peter Lightfoot, 39, PC Richard Kelsall and another named only as Sergeant Russell - and during a six-minute ordeal suffered 14 head and facial injuries.Lance Corporal Aspinall, who admitted being drunk and swearing at the officers, said of his arrest: "I remember thinking, 'I'm going to die here. I cant believe I've survived Afghanistan and Iraq, and and now I'm going to die in ! my home town at the hands of the police."He was later tried and found guilty of assaulting two police officers. He was made to do 200 hours of community service and pay PC Lightfoot £100 in compensation and one of the other officers £150.Lance Corporal Aspinall said: "It was awful. I had come back from fighting in Afghanistan and now I was painting a school as a convict, standing next to men who were drug dealers and robbers."Determined to clear his name, he launched an appeal and on November 13, Crown Court Judge John Phipps quashed the verdict, saying he was "shocked and appalled at the level of police violence shown" in CCTV footage of the attack which was shown in court.Lance Corporal Aspinall also received the £250 compensation back from the officers.Greater Manchester Police say they are now investigating the conduct of the police officers involved and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.A police spokesman said: "Greater Man! chester Police's Professional Standards Branch is investigatin! g the co nduct of officers on the Wigan division."One officer has had his duties restricted and another two are being investigated."The matter has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission but an independent complaint has also been made about this matter."
